Step into the backrooms of museums throughout Southern New England, exploring some of the region’s most valuable and historically-significant collections along the way. This month, join Rhode Island PBS for the return of Treasures Inside the Museum, a 7-part docuseries that visits the places dedicated to preserving local history and culture.
The series transports viewers back in time, shedding light on the region’s long and storied past. Featuring two locations in each episode, this is a treasure hunt you won’t want to miss.
Back-to-back episodes of Treasures Inside the Museum air on Fridays at 8:00 and 8:30 p.m., beginning October 2 (with encores to follow on Saturdays at noon and 11 p.m.)

Rhode Islanders are no strangers to life on the water. At the Herreshoff Marine Museum, explore the Ocean State’s history of industrial and recreational sailing, as well as the prolific boat designers that honed their craft nearby. In the second segment, discover the treasures inside the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace & Museum.

At the Woonsocket Museum of Work & Culture, explore Rhode Island’s contributions to Major League Baseball, and learn why families left Quebec for a better life in New England. Then, take a trip to the Rhode Island State Archives for a detailed look at our colonial history.

At the Tomaquag Museum in Exeter, the history of the region’s indigenous people comes alive. See a collection of meticulously-crafted Native American wampum jewelry, then reach back in time at the Rhode Island Historical Society.

The New Bedford Whaling Museum is full of exhibits that chronicle the history of whaling in the region. Listen to harrowing tales of men who ventured around the world in wooden whaling ships and view the 1848 panorama entrusted to the New Bedford Whaling Museum. In the second segment, discover the stories behind a private car collection at the Newport Car Museum.

The Redwood Library & Athenaeum collection includes rare books and timeless exhibits, while the World War II Education Center preserves the stories of the Greatest Generation.
