101: “How Britain Got Moving” – April 15 at 10 p.m.
In the first episode of How the Victorians Built Britain, Michael Buerk explains how Victorian engineers revolutionized public transport with the inventions of the omnibus, the modern-day bicycle, and the London Underground.
102: “Saving the Nation’s Health” – April 22 at 10 p.m.
It took the Great Stink of 1858 to convince Parliament to create a sewer system for London. In this episode, Buerk reveals how the Victorians created said sewer system, providing clean water for all.
103: “Making of the Modern Home” – April 29 at 10 p.m.
Buerk unfolds how Victorians introduced gas power to the home — transforming the kitchen, lighting, heating, and even home entertainment.
104: “The Birth of Machines” – May 6 at 10 p.m.
In the fourth episode of the series, Buerk examines cotton’s place at the heart of mass production, via the creation of the inner-city railway, a game-changing loom, and the birth of the Manchester Ship Canal.
