In the 1970s, one man arrived in California and proved how sweet the American Dream can be.
Cambodian refugee Ted Ngoy came to the United States with nothing and singlehandedly built a pastry empire that took over the West Coast. Starting from one doughnut shop in Orange County, Christy’s Doughnuts became a multi-million-dollar doughnut empire that allowed Ngoy to sponsor hundreds of visas for fellow Cambodian refugees and offer them steady employment in his donut shops.
Alice Gu makes her directorial debut in The Donut King, exploring themes of immigration, assimilation, prejudice, and who gets access to the American Dream.
The Donut King airs Thursday, July 1 at 9 p.m. and Saturday, July 3 at 10 p.m.
