As a teenager in the 1940s and 50s, McKenna became the go-to pianist for New York City’s renowned jazz scene, playing with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Gene Krupa, and Stan Getz. Later in the 80s, his decade-long residency at the famous Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston became the hottest show in town.
Although adored and praised by many, McKenna’s struggle with alcoholism, his modesty, and shyness soon impacted the notoriety he and his career deserved. Now a legend amongst jazz and music elites, his unique playing style continues to influence pianists around the globe.
