Meet Bob Comis, a pig farmer in the rolling hills of Upstate New York. For over a decade, Comis has provided a humane life for the pigs on his farm. Some would even call it idyllic. But as he tends to the pigs, he begins to develop a closeness with them that sparks an internal crisis.
His weekly trips to the slaughterhouse soon become unbearable, creating ghosts that will haunt him forever. In the documentary The Last Pig, Comis’ soul-baring journey guides viewers through this intimate tale of compassion. The farmer questions his own morality and the value of life in what becomes the final year of his pig farming career.
Directed by Allison Argo, The Last Pig provides a snapshot of ethics and the landscape of animal agriculture while raising crucial questions about the sanctity of life and the significance of empathy. The one-hour documentary airs on WSBE Rhode Island PBS April 19 at 9 p.m. and encores April 24 at 11:00 p.m.
