More than 100 years after a state-led genocide killed roughly one million Armenians in the then-Ottoman Empire, the true story of the massacre continues to be suppressed by today's Turkish government. Determined to uncover long-buried truths, the granddaughter of exiled genocide survivors and American-Armenian filmmaker, Ani Hovannisian, shares her journey from Los Angeles to the original site of the genocide in the documentary The Hidden Map. The film premieres August 27 at noon on WSBE Rhode Island PBS.
Working alongside a Scottish explorer, Hovannisian sets out to unearth the forbidden history of her ancestors by exploring the remnants of civilizations left unmarked on modern maps. As they explore abandoned structures and sacred relics, the pair gain access to the silenced voices of the people whose histories were deliberately extinguished in a centuries-long campaign to hide the past. Documenting Hovannisian's four trips to Turkey over seven years, The Hidden Map is the story of a treacherous search for knowledge that rewards bold curiosity with stunning discovery.
